2017 RYLA Ambassadors present to Club![]() We had the pleasure of hearing from our two RYLA Ambassadors, Noah Spinner and Jenna Kull from Cuyahoga Falls High School at our August 1 meeting. They both spoke about their week long experience at RYLA at Baldwin Wallace College earlier in the summer. They both echoed the same sentiment that the skills that they learned at the camp will be invaluable both in the upcoming year at their school, as well as in their life long professional careers. They both also expounded on the relationships they created, and the amount of fun it was for them in the week. Both also expressed gratitude to the club for allowing them and sponsoring them for this week. Cuyahoga Falls High School is fortunate to have these two fine individuals in student leadership roles this coming year. Noah also was awarded the outstanding camper this year, and it should be noted that Jenna was the only representative who will be a junior this coming year, when all the other attendees are incoming seniors.

Battered Womens Shelter Opens in Akron! As you know, our Rotary Cluster group participated in the furnishing of two full rooms of furniture in the new Battered Womens Shelter in Akron. The clubs helped with some of the construction demolition and also assembled furniture when it was delivered. The facility is now open and serving the women, men and children of Summit and Medina Counties. The following is from the Akron Beacon Journal Article dated February 1st, 2017.
![]() Battered women’s shelter will open doors this month with meal dilemma solved By Marilyn Miller A number of delays, including nowhere to prepare meals, won’t stop the new Summit County Battered Women’s Shelter from opening by mid-February, its director said Tuesday. Terri Heckman, the director of the shelter, said the delays created a financial dilemma, but they will not stop progress……….. “I really had to make a decision. Do I leave the three buildings open and operating, which is not a financially smart thing to do, or do I close the old two shelters that are on their last leg, the whole reason why we built the new building, or should I move all the residents into the renovated facility and figure out a way to feed the residents, until our kitchen opens,” she said. She chose to bring the residents to the new building, and work on a meal plan — finding meals for 90 days. “The word is getting out, we have some real creative people. One man called and said he’d donate money or just call in 20 pizzas,” Heckman said. “People like doing hands-on work too. My mom is 83 and she asked if a bunch of her friends can get together and just make dinner one day and we pick it up. I said absolutely. It makes them feel good and it serves a huge purpose for us.” Heckman said the agency will close one building at a time, so some clients will come in February and others will come in March so the number of people served will increase next month. There are currently 70 residents in the two shelters and 154 beds available at the new facility, dubbed the Center for Hope and Healing. “Considering where this building started and the new life we have given it in East Akron I really think it’s going to be a testament for a long, long time and give the community something to be proud of when it comes to domestic violence,” Heckman said.

New Year's ResolutionNew Year's Resolution
(Be a Better Rotarian!)
Dear Falls Rotarian,
This is a suggestion to all the members of our club to make and keep one important New Year's Resolution:
BE A BETTER ROTARIAN THIS YEAR!
Being a Rotarian is a commitment to being an active member of the Rotary Club of Cuyahoga Falls. We all know that our lives are busy with our jobs, children, home life, etc. but when we joined Rotary we agreed to fulfill a role in an organization that relies on its members to be involved in meetings, events, and service projects to promote our charitable causes and support the ideals of Rotary.
Although attendance requirements have been adjusted to allow members a little more flexibility today, it does not mean you can send a check to pay your dues and add "Rotarian" to your resume!
There are many ways to be a part of our Club if it is hard for you to make it to the Tuesday meeting. Show up at a service project, planting flowers at the Library, weed the flowers, join in the River Cleanup, help out at Night at the Races or Reverse Raffle, join the Clubs at Heroes' Day, do a make up at a club which meets your schedule better, attend the District events, etc, etc.!
This is a reminder that your participation is not just encouraged, it is required! Make a resolution to BE A BETTER ROTARIAN and an active member of our Club!

4-Way Speech Contest 2012STUDENTS EXCEL AT ROTARY CLUB SPEECH CONTEST
CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH - - The Rotary Club of Cuyahoga Falls held its annual 4-Way Speech Contest on March 27, 2012, with students participating from Cuyahoga Falls High School and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. The students were asked to select a subject of their choice and apply the Rotary 4-Way Test. Five finalists presented their speeches and Chris Karnadi, a a senior at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, was awarded first place and will advance to the Rotary District 6630 competition which will take place on March 31.
“All five presentations were outstanding, which made the judging extremely difficult,” said Joseph McNamee, President of the Rotary Club of Cuyahoga Falls. “I am very impressed with the level of excellence and preparation that was exhibited by each one of the students as they applied the 4-Way Test to their presentation topics.”
From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. The 4-Way Test, created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor and adopted by Rotary in 1943, encourages creative and effective solutions in problem solving situations. The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Chartered in 1925, the Rotary Club of Cuyahoga Falls is part of Rotary International, the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs worldwide. Its volunteer membership of business and professional leaders provides humanitarian service and encourages high ethical standards in all vocations under the motto “Service Above Self”. |
